BC Meat Inspection Regulations
On the 30th of September, new provincial meat inspection regulations came into effect. Producers are still figuring out how this affects them and their animals.
Check out these”Be Subversive” graphics that can be used for buttons and stickers. Designed by some concerned folks on the Sunshine Coast.

BC Food Systems Network Statement
Are you a British Columbian who supports small farms and local food systems? Then you should be angry about the upcoming meat regulations which will stop farmers from selling their meat products at the farmgate as they have done for decades. Everywhere we go in B.C., Alisa and I have heard about the immediate harm this regulation will do to local farms - and to farm animals as the farmers are forced to ship their animals to distant slaughterhouses. (As if to drive this point home, we drove past an accident scene the other day - a truck hauling cattle had gone off the road sideways. Dead and twisted cattle were heaped in a pile nearby.) Many farmers, unable to carry the costs of the new system or unwilling to have others kill their animals, are simply preparing to pack it in. Others are getting ready for an underground black market in meat. But there is another option: let’s get organized to resist this latest assault on trust and transparency in our food!
The link below will take you to the first of what we suspect will be many petitions against the new regulations. Even if you don’t live in British Columbia, take a look at the kind of policies that are making it harder for people to eat locally across North America - and the urgent comments from so many local eaters!
