Mailbag: Growing Farmers Markets, One at a Time

JUNE 27, 2007 - Donna in Ontario wrote to tell us that a friend of her mother's read our book and tried the 100-Mile Diet - but then she carried it a good ways further than most. She corralled two friends and together they started an organic farmers market in their town of Oakville this month. They've already got a strawberry festival going. When I told James about it, he said, "Wow, it's amazing what people will do. Start a farmers market? All we did was write a book!" Um, and eat within a 100 miles for a whole year, I reminded him. Suddenly, those six weeks of eating potatoes, back when we started, seem worth it. And Donna, the lady who wrote us? She got a job at the new Oakville market! That's proof positive of how local eating helps the local economy. I'm starting to feel like together, we really can change the world. -ADS
