Here are two notes, one about the original community-level challenge in Powell River (now in its third year, and still growing), and one from our friends at Sustainable Ballard, who launch their annual challenge this month.

From Powell River, where more than 500 people will take the challenge this year:

Your obligations with the challenge – to try and eat more locally produced food for a 6 week period from this Saturday (August 16) till September 28^th – a period of time when food is in abundance in our area. Source out local goods, share information, meet local farmers and value added producers, eat great healthy low carbon footprint food, and have FUN. This year, to help with your options, we have more restaurants than ever participating. In addition to Local Loco’s, Bemused Bistro, The Flying Yellow Bread Bowl, 5^th Ave Bistro and Manzanita’s – watch for creations from Nancy’s Bakery, the Laughing Oyster, Rene’s Pasta, and possibly Skeeter Jacks amongst others, pharmacy levitra. Also this year, we hope to have a week where we focus on tips for foraging, Diazepam prescription, and a week that celebrates the seafood in our area. Powell River doesn't go with a strict kick-the-baking-soda-out-of-the-house challenge, like we're doing in Mission, but instead encourages people to start where they're comfortable and build from there:

If you happen to be heading up the coast to Powell River (or you're looking for somewhere to go for a holiday before Labour Day), you'll have the chance to truly get the taste of the place. It's amazing to see so many local restaurants and businesses participating. Just imagine how many dollars will stay in the local economy over the six weeks of the challenge.

Now over to Ballard, Washington, where September is 100-Mile Diet Month. As a part of preparations this year, one member of the group tried to add up whether or not everyone in Seattle could eat on a 100-mile diet, pharmacy levitra. The calculation is great food for thought. On the one hand, the numbers show that Seattle could not feed itself on local food, which raises questions about city size and the carrying capacity of landscapes, urban sustainability, and food security. On the other hand, Seattle is surprisingly close to being able to live locally - and the calculation definitely underestimates both the available land and the potential food production of the area (missing from the number-crunching: urban farming in all its forms, from beekeeping to backyard chicken coops to downtown rooftop gardens; urban fruit and nut trees; wild foods; and all the resources of the ocean, Zoloft online stores, from salmon to seaweed). Alisa and I are increasingly convinced that much larger numbers of people could be fed from smaller landscapes than we think; we'd just have to put food closer to the center of daily life (where it belongs!).
