Mailbag: Callouts from Manitoba; Charlottesville, VA; and San Luis Obispo, CA
AUGUST 30, 20077 - Paul wrote from Winnipeg, Manitoba, about a dedicated group who'll be putting their 100-mile energy into the international Eat Local Challenge (see the post for August 18) and beyond:
We are launching our 100 Mile Manitoba challenge on September 1 at the St. Norbert Farmers' Market in Winnipeg. We currently have 110 individual Manitobans pledged to eat from within 100 miles from September 1-December 9 ( 100 days).
Great news, Paul, and we hope someone - maybe you? - will write it from time to time to let us know what's cooking in Manitoba. Now here's a note from Caroline in Monticello (Charlottesville), Virginia, about a September event - good inspiration for others planning their own festivities:
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is sponsoring the Heritage Harvest Festival, September 8, 2007, at Monticello, Charlottesville, Virginia. The festival is an educational and networking event, with workshops, presenters, a farmers' market, and an "old timey seed swap." The seed swap will allow the seed savers, heirloom enthusiasts and aspiring seed savers attending the festival to meet and exchange seeds and information in a more relaxed setting before the extensive schedule of workshops, lectures, tastings, tours and demonstrations begin.
And here's Bob in San Luis Obispo, with an open invitation to help build a 100-mile/locavore community:
Anyone intersted email us. We have about 15 people so far . . . we are planning on having a meal soon. Contact Bob at info@hopedance.org and put "locavores" in the subject box. Thanks!
