Is Local Eating Mickey Mouse?

AUGUST 29, 2007 - Really, we don't know whether to laugh or cry. A reader sent us a report from the Inhabitat website, where a correspondent visited the "Land Pavilion" attraction at the Epcot Center in Florida. Apparently, they have a six-acre greenhouse that supplies the produce to the Garden Pavilion restaurant. Sounds pretty local, right? But there are a few questions - like where do all the hydroponic nutrients and Styrofoam growing pots get shipped in from? And isn't Florida awfully warm, so that you could grow vegetables outdoors much of the year without building a separate structure to "protect" them from the big bad world of rain and sunshine. The Epcot Center was originally meant to display the best of future thinking. However, it seems they've got left behind in their own past. But hey, you can see pumpkins and cucumbers shaped like Mickey Mouse heads. Now that's progress.-ADS
