Green Your Campbell Cash

This June, every British Columbian will receive a Climate Action Dividend of $100 as part of the B.C. government’s “revenue neutral” carbon tax announced earlier this year.

That’s $440 million that could be put toward climate-action projects. We’re writing to invite you to be part of a campaign that inspires British Columbians to do just that.

The Green Your Campbell Cash project is a web outreach campaign developed by The Tyee, the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, Voters Taking Action on Climate Change, the David Suzuki Foundation and the Pembina Institute to showcase and raise support for climate action projects occurring in B.C.

Our intent is to encourage collective action on climate change by inviting groups and individuals to showcase their projects on a website where British Columbians will be able to pledge their support (and their dividend).

How the Campaign Will Work

The campaign’s main vehicle is a website designed to showcase climate action projects. B.C.-based organizations will be invited to submit their projects, all of which will be reviewed by Tyee staff prior to being published on the site. Those that meet the criteria will receive their own project page.

Visitors to the site will be able to vote for their favourite projects and connect with project organizers to pledge their support (and their Climate Action Dividend). The site will not be equipped to accept donations or e-mail addresses on behalf of any organization or project.

The Green Your Campbell Cash website will officially launch in early June, and project submissions will be accepted until July 15, 2008.

This campaign has the potential to reach a broad audience of British Columbians who are eager to take action against climate change. As the rebate cheques go in the mail this June, we have a tremendous opportunity to engage people who truly want to make a difference with their Climate Action Rebate.

You Can Help this Campaign Succeed

As we prepare to launch the Green Your Campbell Cash site, we are seeking the support of B.C.-based organizations that can play a crucial role in spreading the word about this campaign. We are looking for supporters who will do the following:

* Send one or two campaign e-mails to their member/contact lists, or include information in a newsletter to ensure the broadest possible reach

* Post a campaign button on their website or blog

* Encourage their membership to get involved in the campaign

Supporters of this campaign will receive:

* Recognition as a campaign supporter on the site’s home page

* Recognition as a campaign supporter in press releases and campaign mailouts

* The opportunity to showcase their own climate action projects on the site

* Access to a large audience of British Columbians ready to take action on climate change, and the opportunity to connect with them directly

We believe that by pooling our resources — and by encouraging British Columbians to pool theirs — we can work to ensure B.C.’s Climate Action Dividend truly makes a difference. We hope you will consider playing a key role in this campaign.

To get involved, please contact Lisa Manfield at The Tyee at (604) 689-7489 or at lmanfield@thetyee.ca

Thanks in advance for your support,
