Alberta Resources…and Two Questions

APRIL 30, 2007 The great thing about events featuring farmers: we always end up eating great food. Aurora, Ontario, a town attempting a careful balance between a rural history and a strong urban inflow, cheerfully sent us home with two kinds of apple cider, plus a beet-horseradish relish and a "ramembert" cheese - after samples of yoghurt, maple syrup, honey, soda bread.... We're too full to write, so we'll take this chance to post an important update--and put out a couple of questions. First, from our "it wouldn't be possible here" file, an update on Calgary, Alberta. If my blog on Calgary's food scene left any Calgarians still believing local eating wasn't realistic, they might want to check out the Alberta Regional Sourcing Directory, Dine Alberta, and Chomp Around Alberta sites. Our thanks to Darleen for continuing to help show the "impossible" is often just the "whatever happened to my spirit of exploration"? And now, two questions. Number one, from Catherine - has anyone found wheat in New York? And better yet, is there anyone who can tell us a (true) story about the history of wheat in New York? Number two, from, well, me - I'm looking for a certain quotation. It goes something like this: "We send food all around the world. Surely it would be simpler just to send recipes." The difference is, whoever said it first was a lot sharper and more eloquent. Does anyone know the quote and who said it? Was it Small Is Beautiful author E.F. Schumacher?-JBM
