A Year of Local Eating Begins in Brooklyn

AUGUST 2, 2007 - “Local is the new organic,” says Leda from Brooklyn, and she’s charging forward with that battle cry. She wrote to tell us she is beginning a year on a “250-mile diet” on August 7. Evidently, she learned from our lesson that starting in spring is hard. Though she will have to endure a frenzy of canning and freezing from the get-go! At least the bounty will be evident.

On her blog Leda’s Urban Homestead, she says that she chose that distance because she already had a link with Windflower Farms 200 miles away (through a Community Supported Agriculture box delivery). We are happy to see people define local as what works for them, and would never encourage anyone to abandon a farmer they knew!

Leda has already found a flour miller. From all the messages we receive, I know there will be a lot of jealous local eaters out there across North America, because grain is often a challenge. Just goes to show that no location is too difficult - New York is the ultimate urban desert. But Leda doesn’t sound the least bit worried.

Good luck and good eating. -ADS
