A Month on the 100-Mile Diet in Madison, Wisconsin

AUGUST 24, 2007 - Jen, Scott and seven-year-old Evie are all well through their month of local eating in Madison, Wisconsin. "We live in a state that grows a lot of food," they write. "We are within walking distance from the largest producers' Farmers Market in North America." (Anyone care to dispute their claim?) They have done some of the most serious sleuthing of anyone we've seen. For instance, they love soy sauce - and when they saw that the Kikkoman soy factory was only 75 miles from where they lived, they were excited. Unfortunately, a phone call revealed that the soy came from across the US and Canada. However, they do have local wheat - though it's hard wheat, less suited to bread making. On their blog they go into the details of milling it by hand, and sourdough experiments. "Bread geeks" take note! Scott had previously built himself an outdoor wood-fire oven. You can even see his hand-milled flour under a microscope! The family members are self-proclaimed "homeschoolers, bread-bakers, kayakers, ice skaters, circus lovers, cat people and travelers. We are not foodies or chefs or rich." Happy eating folks!-ADS
